There is always a lot at stake in any election. It’s critical that you exercise your right to vote! That means not only knowing the candidates and understanding the issues, but also knowing when, where, and how to cast your ballot.
Step 1. Register to vote.
You must be registered 15 days before Election Day in order to vote. Even if you think you are registered, it’s always a good idea to double check. Click here to learn more about voter registration in South Dakota.
Step 2. Confirm the date & location of the election.

Step 3. Know the candidates & understand the issues.
A lot is at stake when you cast your vote. It’s important to fully understand the candidates’ platforms and campaign promises, as well as understanding the nuances of ballot measures — such as the proposed Medicaid expansion.
Step 4. Familiarize yourself with the ballot.
Sample ballots are published in advance of the election so you know what to expect when you arrive at the polls. Take a look to make sure you are familiar with all of your options — both political candidates and ballot measures.
